Issue 21/22: 2nd Annual Southern Music Issue
I like to think that this issue worked very well. Steve Yarbrough remembers singing on a local TV show as a child and the essay he writes about this is somewhat discomfiting (though very funny). Ron Carlson stylishly and convincingly argues that Bobbie Gentry's mysterious and sublime 'Ode to Billie Joe' is really a great American short story. Michael Tisserand hangs out with the ancient members of the Hackleberry Ramblers as they gig on MTV. Our then-associate editor, John J. Sullivan, describes how his brother nearly died from being electrocuted and all the crazy and profound things his brother said while hallucinating in the hospital (this brilliant piece is included in our anthology). Marty Stuart proves he can write prose as well as songs in his piece about a strange experience he had in Memphis while on tour. John Ryan Seawright explores the compelling history of Tom Wiggins, a blind 19th century piano prodigy (and the son of parents born into slavery). And more and more and more. The CD features an exclusive REM song (their first without drummer Bill Berry) and some other masterpieces. There are too many to mention but here's a few: 'Will the Circle Be Unbroken' by the Staples Singers, 'Yes We Can Can' by Lee Dorsey, 'Glow Worm' by Johnny Mercer, 'Duty Free' (an unreleased version) by Vic Chestnutt, 'Your Lips' by Olu Dara (shoulda been a top-ten hit), 'Is You Is or Is you Ain't My Baby' by Louis Jordan (the great Louis Jordan, I should say).
