Description

William Gay told me that for a long time he had wanted to write about the infamous Bell Witch case which occurred in his neck of the woods in Tennessee. So it was pleasure to let him loose on this and the result was our cover story for this issue.

I'm fascinated by creepy stories where things are more intimated than spelled out. Patricia Highsmith was the master of this form. We've run a few in THE OA (including two by John McManus). Here is 'Calendar Girl' by James Carlos Blake that is a little more overt in its revelations but totally creepy nonetheless.

One of our editors at the time, Annie Wedekind, wrote in 'Do Not Go Gently' about a nearly forgotten race riot that erupted in New Orleans in the summer of 1900. It's a startling story and very upsetting. Wedekind's an obviously talented writer who we intend to get back into the magazine."
